Subtracting Sardines

Students will learn how to subtract with numbers 1-9 in a visual & audio 3D format using sardines as manipulatives Subtract numbers up to 9-9 & best of all -8 to 8. Looking kind of like a calculator, students tap a number from the keypad & that many sardines come sliding onto the screen. The sardines are interactive & can be slid around to practice touch counting. Students then tap the minus button & choose another number. Then that number of sardines are eaten leaving their little fish bones behind. Once students tap the equal button, the fish bones disappear & the remaining fish(es) are encased in ice. The students are given three possible answers & must choose one. If students tap the correct answer, they'll receive a coin to add to their piggy bank. Once the problem is solved, the numbers on the keypad are checked off. A nice feature that keeps students from using the same numbers over & over again.

This app also allows students to create answers with negative numbers. Example, a student taps 3 & 3 sardines appear. They next tap - 5. The three fishes are eaten & two new red fishes appear. Once the = key is tapped, the red fishes are eaten. Students are then left with the fish bones of the red fishes & choose the correct answer out of three possible choices.

There are also two companion apps, Adding Apples ($0.99) & Multiplying Acorns (iPad - $0.99). Subtracting Sardines is for grades preschool up to third grade.
